| H I S T O R Y | There is no place in the world, where pipe making activity reaches this level. In 1850, the craftsmen of Saint Claude (France) started to make briar pipes and discovered all the secrets to use this unpredictable material, that is briar. Today, more than 200 people are still working in the small city of Saint Claude to produce pipes or pipe accessories. In 1998 seven companies with the help of the "Confrerie des maitres-pipiers" pursue the old tradition of hand-crafted pipe making. Saint Claude is a small city
(13000 inhabitants) of France, located in the heart of the Jura.
The signs, illustrating the "passion" and the "know-how" of the master
pipe makers ( "maitres-pipers" ) are present everywhere in the town.

The Pipe and Diamond Museum present the history of pipe in Saint Claude.
In particular you will discover tools and machines used
in the beginning of the XXth century to produce in high
quantity (more than 30 000 000 / year) pipes to export all around the world.
But you will probably appreciate the large collection of
masterpieces realized over the years
by the craftsmen of Saint Claude. In the same museum, diamond cutting, an other important activity of Saint Claude craftsmen is presented. And you can also discover masterpieces realized in the past (this activity is not still alive today) in Saint Claude. |
