There is no place in the world, where pipe making activity reaches this level. In 1850, the craftsmen of Saint Claude (France) started to make briar pipes and discovered all the secrets to use this unpredictable material, that is briar. Today, more than 200 people are still working in the small city of Saint Claude to produce pipes or pipe accessories. In 1998 seven companies with the help of the "Confrerie des maitres-pipiers" pursue the old tradition of hand-crafted pipe making. You will discover on this site the pipes of 2 of them, which have kept the most traditional methods and processes:EWA pipe, Jean Masson.

Saint Claude is a small city (13000 inhabitants) of France, located in the heart of the Jura. The signs, illustrating the "passion" and the "know-how" of the master pipe makers ( "maitres-pipers" ) are present everywhere in the town.
The Pipe and Diamond Museum presents the history of pipe of Saint Claude and the main processes and tools to make a pipe.
The "Confrerie des Maitres Pipiers de Saint-Claude" , created in 1966, promote the master pipe maker's work and elect every year The First Pipe Smoker of France.
In the main street, many stores present a large collection of the pipe models designed and realized locally.

The Pipe and Diamond Museum present the history of pipe in Saint Claude. In particular you will discover tools and machines used in the beginning of the XX^th century to produce in high quantity (more than 30 000 000 / year) pipes to export all around the world. But you will probably appreciate the large collection of masterpieces realized over the years by the craftsmen of Saint Claude.
In the same museum, diamond cutting, an other important activity of Saint Claude craftsmen is presented. And you can also discover masterpieces realized in the past (this activity is not still alive today) in Saint Claude.

The "Confrérie des Maitres-Pipiers" of Saint Claude was created in 1966. All the members (now 1000) are chosen all around the world for the passion, they have for the Pipe.
Three meetings are held every year. In one of these meetings " The First Pipe Smoker of France" is elected and received his award: a pipe (representing himself) designed by Paul Lanier. In 1997, Jacques Audiard, was the 32nd recipient. Jacques Audiard is a French film maker and is perhaps best known for "Un heros très discret" ,which won acclaim at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival.
